The Citizens crushed Salford 8-0, while the Reds crushed Accrington 4-0.
On a somewhat uneventful day of FA Cup third-round action on Saturday, Premier League clubs showed off their prowess as Liverpool easily defeated fourth-tier Accrington Stanley and Manchester City easily defeated Salford City.
Liverpool defeated Salford, a team co-owned by a number of former Manchester United greats, 4-0 at Anfield, while a drastically altered Manchester City also cruised to an 8-0 victory in a later kickoff.
The only major surprise of the day came at Brentford, when the Premier League team lost 1-0 to Plymouth Argyle, the bottom team in the second division.
Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Brighton & Hove Albion are the six other elite teams that easily defeated lower level opponents to advance to round four.
Liverpool’s path in manager Arne Slot’s maiden FA Cup match was completed by goals from Jayden Danns and Federico Chiesa after the interval and goals from Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the first half.
Just before halftime, Alexander-Arnold, who was wearing the captain’s armband amid a lot of uncertainty about his future, hammered a shot into the top corner to give Liverpool the lead while Accrington was holding their own against the Premier League leaders.
“I could discuss that for hours! “Unbelievable!” After receiving a lot of criticism for his performance against Manchester United last week, Slot expressed his admiration for Alexander-Arnold’s effort.
“I think it was good for him to play again in our own stadium, to feel the reception of the fans again.”
Following a terrible dip at the close of the previous season, City has shown indications of getting back on track. They were particularly vicious against Salford, who are co-owned by former United colleagues Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, and David Beckham.
Unfortunately for Salford, none of those were available as James McAtee scored a hat-trick as City ran wild.
