By including both Keshav Maharaj and Wiaan Mulder in the team for the forthcoming two-Test series against Pakistan, which is set to take place during the festive period, South Africa has chosen to take a chance on their fitness.

Just prior to the toss, Maharaj was removed from the playing XI after sustaining a groin strain during warm-ups for Tuesday’s first ODI against Pakistan in Paarl. On Wednesday, a scan is scheduled to determine the extent of the injury. Senuran Muthusamy, a left-arm spinner, is the team’s sole other spin option if Maharaj is out.

Mulder is nearing the end of his recuperation after breaking his right middle finger last month while batting in Durban against Sri Lanka. He will be featured in the Boxing Day Test match if he is cleared to play. Top-order batter Matthew Breetzke will be released from the team if he is fit.

Two uncapped players, seam bowlers Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka, have been called up by South Africa in a significant move. After a strong showing for the South African Invitation XI against the England Lions, when he took 1 for 21 in five overs, Bosch—the son of former international cricketer Tertius Bosch—gets his maiden call-up. The roster for the current ODI series against Pakistan now includes Maphaka, who was part of the squad for the Sri Lanka series as a stand-in for the injured Gerald Coetzee but did not play.

Temba Bavuma, the captain, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, Kagiso Rabada, and Maharaj are the other seven members of the current 50-over team who are also part of the South African Test team.

As South Africa controls its bowling resources for the forthcoming Test series, Rabada and Jansen, who both played in the opening ODI, are anticipated to have restricted roles. A number of important bowlers are already out for the Proteas because of injuries; Coetzee, Lizaad Williams, Lungi Ngidi, and Nandre Burger won’t be available until the coming year.

South Africa needs just one more win to guarantee a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, therefore the series against Pakistan is vital. SuperSport Park in Centurion will host the Test match on Boxing Day. The New Year’s Test will thereafter take place at Newlands in Cape Town.
