With his 34th century, Smith eclipsed Sir Alastair Cook and Kane Williamson on the list of most Test hundreds.
Australia’s Steve Smith had a standout performance in the fourth Border Gavaskar Trophy Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, leaving the visiting Indian team with a difficult challenge to stay in contention.
At the end of day one of the fourth test, the match was evenly balanced. Australia had amassed 311 runs for the loss of six wickets, and both teams had the opportunity to dominate day two. India hoped to wrap up the Australian innings swiftly and take an advantage with their batting, but Steve Smith had other ideas.
The Australian batting legend delivered an outstanding performance, scoring his 34th Test century. Smith now has more Test hundreds than Sir Alastair Cook and Kane Williamson. He also joined superstars such as Brian Lara, Sunil Gavaskar, Younis Khan, and Mahela Jayawardene, who all have 34 Test tons.
Sachin Tendulkar currently holds the record for the most Test hundreds, with 51. While Smith has a long way to go to reach Tendulkar, he is gaining ground on other great. Rahul Dravid and Joe Root each have 36 Test hundreds, and Smith is just two centuries away from joining them.
Notably, Smith owns the record for the most Test hundreds against India, with 11.
Smith’s performance on day two has put Australia in control, making it difficult for the Indian squad to stage a comeback.
