Benni McCarthy, the former coach of Manchester United, has talked about why Erik ten Hag believed Antony was a “better player” and a better choice than Amad Diallo.

One of the few players to receive recognition for the Red Devils in what is turning out to be yet another frustratingly uneven season is Ivorian teenager Amad. With five goals and seven assists to his name, 22-year-old Amad has pleased many with his work ethic and direct running.

Ruben Amorim, the new United manager, is willing to allow Amad the chance to reach his full potential. Ten Hag, the Portuguese manager’s predecessor, was not always willing to do so, as the Dutch strategist preferred to stick with expensive acquisitions even when those players were having trouble.

WHAT MCCARTHY SAID

McCarthy, a former South Africa player and forwards coach at Old Trafford, explained to the Podcast and Chill Network why certain dubious selection decisions were made: Because he knew Antony from Ajax, the manager [Ten Hag] believed that he was the best player for the position when we set up. He invested in him because he was his player, and the club helped him. Naturally, he had to back the player he had purchased, which is, I believe, why he continued to play Antony. He did so since he was aware of Antony’s potential during his peak.

In addition, Alejandro Garnacho was playing effectively and scored goals. On any given day, [Marcus] Rashford could destroy anyone. Then you have [Rasmus] Hojlund, who must play because you spent £70 million to bring him in. Someone must [miss out], and sadly for Amad, the manager selects the player he believes is more likely to be more capable of playing those kinds of games in terms of strategy, defense, and attack.

Given that United now prefers three at the back and that Amad is versatile enough to play as a wide attacker or wing-back, Amorim has emphasized the value of Amad in his plans. According to the Red Devils’ current manager, “He is very humble and can play different positions.” Because we occasionally give young players a special place in our team, we must use extreme caution while dealing with Amad. With Amad, let’s remain composed.

After scoring a thrilling goal for United in their December 15 derby match against bitter rivals Manchester City, Amad has watched the Red Devils lose back-to-back games and will be looking to turn things around when they go to Wolves on Boxing Day.
