Pakistan, who are hosting an ICC tournament for the first time since 1996, would be eliminated if they lose to India in their upcoming match in ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Team India defeated Bangladesh by a commanding 6 wickets on Thursday to begin their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. India chased down the target 229 with 21 balls remaining, and vice-captain Shubman Gill got the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his match-winning innings of 101* (129 balls).

Bangladesh had previously been restricted to a meager 228 runs by Indian bowlers under the leadership of Mohammed Shami. With just two balls remaining, Bangladesh was bowled out. Shami finished with 200 ODI wickets and dismissed five batsman throughout his time in the game. In terms of balls bowled, the bowler also surpassed Mitchell Starc’s world record for the fastest 200 ODI wickets.

In terms of matches, Shami also became the fastest Indian to reach 200 ODI wickets. With his 103 bowling essays, he surpassed the record of 200 wickets in 133 innings held by current BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. As the second-fastest batter to reach 11,000 ODI runs, Indian captain Rohit Sharma also added a feather to his cap during the game. After Virat Kohli’s 11831 balls, Rohit needed 11,868 balls to reach 11,000 runs.

The ‘Men In Blue’ will play against their bitter rivals and reigning champions, Pakistan. Pakistan’s defense of the tournament championship has not gone as well as they had hoped. At the National Stadium in Karachi on February 19, the hosts lost to New Zealand by 60 runs in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy.
