In the IPl 2025 match between GT and PBKS, Punjab Kings made a playful jibe at the careless fielding performance by bringing up Saeed Ajmal’s legendary drop catch from a 2009 match. In the powerplay, Priyansh Arya was given a lifeline by Rashid Khan and Arshad Khan.

During their IPL 2025 opener against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, Punjab Kings were in the mood for a good time, dominating the social media game. Their social media squad was just as explosive on X as their batters were on the field. Punjab capitalized on the situation by making fun of Gujarat Titans’ poor fielding with a well-known meme that included former Pakistani players Shoaib Malik and Saeed Ajmal.

When Priyansh Arya top-edged a delivery from Kagiso Rabada, who was playing his first game for the Gujarat Titans, the incident took place in the second over of the game. In his IPL debut, Delhi’s aggressive batter Priyansh was giving it his all, but he was unable to make a clean contact with the ball.

It appeared obvious that Priyansh’s innings was coming to an end when the ball shot into the night sky. But in an effort to finish the catch, Rashid Khan and Arshad Khan both ran back from inside the circle. The left-arm pacer looked to expect Rashid to take the lead, but Rashid, who was running from mid-on, seemed to leave it to Arshad. The outcome? The ball fell harmlessly on the ground between them after a total mix-up.

Both fielders were at blame for their ineffective communication throughout their chase for the catch, even though Rashid was clearly upset.

After receiving a respite on six, Priyansh Arya struck 47 off 23 balls, demonstrating how costly the mistake was. In an interesting innings, he hit seven boundaries and two sixes, and his confidence increased as he began to time the ball better.

The well-known meme, which was shared by Punjab Kings, was a reference to the notorious drop catch that occurred during a 2009 Pakistan-West Indies match.

During the third ODI between Pakistan and the West Indies in Abu Dhabi in 2008, Saeed Ajmal and Shoaib Malik made the notorious lost catch. Chris Gayle, the captain of the West Indies, mistimed a stroke in the sixth over, sending it skyward. A moment of misunderstanding resulted from Ajmal and Malik colliding beneath the dropping ball. Ajmal backed off by kneeling down, expecting Malik to finish the catch when Malik asked for it. The ball, however, fell between them unharmed because Malik paused as well.

However, the Gujarat Titans used the ball to fight back, and during the powerplay, Prabhsimran Simran Singh was removed. Kagiso Rabada took out the wicketkeeper-batter to record his first wicket for the Gujarat Titans.

After top-edging a googly from Rashid Khan, Priyansh Arya fell in the seventh over, giving the Afghanistan spinner his wicket.

Punjab Kings lost momentum when Sai Kishore struck twice in a single over, dismissing Azmatullah Omarzai and Glenn Maxwell in the eleventh over. To spearhead the visitors’ effort, Shreyas Iyer counterattacked, reaching his fifty in just 27 balls.
