Australia (AUS) vs. Afghanistan (AFG), Champions Trophy: For the first time since 2009, Australia advanced to the tournament’s semi-final. Rain played spoiler on Friday, February 28 in Lahore, where Australia was chasing 274 at 109 for 1 in 12.5 overs.

For the first time in sixteen years, Australia advanced to the Champions Trophy semifinals. After their Group B match against Afghanistan was canceled due to rain in Lahore on Friday, February 28, Steve Smith’s team guaranteed their place in the Champions Trophy 2025 final four. Following a spectacular start from Travis Head, Australia was rushing towards a 274-run mark. When play was stopped by rain, they were 109 for 1 in 12.5 overs.

Australia did not win a single match in the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy, despite winning the trophy in 2006 and 2009. The defending world champions have advanced to the round of four despite entering the current tournament with a roster beset by injuries.

Even though the rain barely lasted 30 minutes, the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore saw a disappointing washout as puddles accumulated on the pitch.

With four points from three games, Australia jumped to the top of the Group B points standings. The favorites to join them in the semi-finals are South Africa, who play England on Saturday. Afghanistan will be eliminated if South Africa defeats England. The only way Afghanistan can qualify is if South Africa loses to England by more than 200 runs.

Afghanistan will be devastated because, although they entered the match on the heels of a thrilling victory over England, where they successfully defended 325 in Lahore on Wednesday, they were unable to duplicate that batting performance on Friday. Australia started their campaign with a commanding victory over England before their match against South Africa was called off without a ball being bowled in Rawalpindi.

Spencer Johnson dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck, while Adam Zampa, who was superb with the ball, dismissed Ibrahim Zadran, who had hit an incredible 177 against England, for 22.

Despite playing a brilliant knock of 85, Sediqullah Atal did not have the backing of the other middle-order players. Azmatullah Omarzai, the 2024 ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year, contributed 67 runs off 63 balls to Afghanistan’s competitive total.

TRAVIS HEAD FIRES BEFORE KNOCKOUTS

But Afghanistan paid a heavy price for their subpar fielding, which gave Travis Head and Matt Short early reprieves. Head made Afghanistan pay for their mistakes in the field, while Short was dismissed for 20 from 15 balls. At 59 from 40 balls, he remained undefeated after smashing nine boundaries and a six. Head made a powerful statement with a dominant performance prior to the knockout stage after missing out against England.

Australia’s performance against Afghanistan, particularly their enhanced bowling, will give them a lot of confidence. Even though they had given up more over 300 runs against England, their attack was more focused this time.

Ben Dwarshuis was the star with three wickets, but Spencer Johnson took two. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell came through with a vital six-over spell, giving up just 28 runs and taking one wicket, while Adam Zampa also claimed two.

The four semi-finalists and their standings in the table will be confirmed on Sunday. England face South Africa in the final Group B match on Saturday in Karachi, while India take on New Zealand in the last Group A game in Dubai on Sunday.
