Pat Cummins, who is on paternity leave and recuperating from an ankle injury, will be replaced by Steve Smith as team captain.
Cooper Connolly received his first call-up, and Nathan McSweeney returned to the Australian team’s 16-man squad for the forthcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka. Beau Webster and Sam Konstas, who performed well in their debut Test matches, have also kept their spots.
Three frontline spinners—Nathan Lyon, Matt Kuhnemann, and Todd Murphy—have been added because of the spin-friendly conditions in Galle, the venue for both Test matches.
However, Mitchell Marsh missed out on selection after being left out of the final Test match against India.
Pat Cummins, who is recuperating from an ankle injury while on paternity leave, will be replaced by Steven Smith as team captain. After sustaining a calf injury during the India series, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been rested in order to concentrate on the Champions Trophy.
“Sri Lanka is a challenging and exciting place to tour given the different conditions the players may experience,” chair of selectors George Bailey said. “This squad provides several options to structure the XI depending on the wickets they encounter,” he added. Connolly, a 21-year-old left-handed batter and left-arm spinner from Western Australia, has been added as another all-round option. His selection has further diminished Glenn Maxwell’s hopes of a Test return. Maxwell, who was close to playing during the last tour of Sri Lanka in 2022, remains stuck on seven Test caps.
Beau Webster and Sam Konstas have received recognition for their significant contributions throughout the last two Test matches against India. Webster contributed with both bat and ball, including a half-century on debut in Sydney, while Konstas produced a quick 60 at the MCG.
Given that Cameron Green is anticipated to return later this year, former captain Aaron Finch thinks it will be challenging for Mitchell Marsh to regain a berth.
“I think it’ll be really hard for Mitch to make a comeback, especially since Green is returning in early March,” Finch stated.
Before going to Sri Lanka, the team will first go to the United Arab Emirates for a training camp. First test match of the series is scheduled to begin on January 29.
