In Test cricket, Babar Azam and Shan Masood made history with Pakistan’s highest opening partnership against South Africa. The previous mark of 133 runs, achieved by Yasir Hameed and Younis Khan in Centurion during the 2006–07 season, was exceeded by the pair’s unbroken stand of 140 runs on day three of the second Test in Cape Town.

Babar and Masood held their own under pressure as Pakistan entered the second innings trailing after being knocked out for 194 in response to South Africa’s massive 615. Due to Saim Ayub’s injury, Babar Azam opened the innings with a smooth unbeaten 59, and Masood followed up with a tough unbeaten 70.

In addition to shattering the long-standing record, this opening stand provided Pakistan a chance to win the game. The South African attack, spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, was blunted by the pair’s flawless technique and calmness.

Babar scored the most runs (58) when Pakistan was bowled for 194 in their first innings earlier in the game. The action was dominated by South Africa’s bowlers, especially Rabada (3-55) and Keshav Maharaj (2-14). Thanks to hundreds from their top-order batters, the Proteas had already amassed a dominant 615 in their first inning.

Pakistan appeared to be headed for an innings loss after being forced to follow-on, but the visitors were given hope by the heroics of Babar and Masood. In addition to being the best opening partnership against South Africa, their partnership marks Pakistan’s first opening partnership of 50 runs in nine Test matches.

With both batters taking measured chances and punishing loose balls, the duo demonstrated a balance between caution and aggression. The Cape Town crowd was electrified by Babar’s drives and Masood’s backhand punches as they effortlessly countered the pace and spin.

It will be crucial for this record-breaking duo to maintain their resistance on day four, since Pakistan is still down by 281 runs. Pakistan may yet be able to rescue a draw or maybe put South Africa on the defensive if Babar and Masood can maintain their position.
