Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul shone out on a day for India’s openers, leading the Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals to decisive wins in the Indian Premier League on Saturday.
Rahul came back to bat first for undefeated Delhi, and he hit 77 to assist his team defeat Chennai Super Kings by 25 runs for their third consecutive victory of the year.
In the second game of the day, Rajasthan defeated Punjab by 50 runs in Mullanpur, close to Chandigarh, thanks to a brilliant 67 from Jaiswal. It was Punjab’s first defeat of the season.
With a 45-ball knock and an 89-run opening partnership with captain Sanju Samson, left-handed Jaiswal spearheaded the batting attack and helped lead Rajasthan to 205-4.
Rajasthan crossed the 200-run threshold for the first time in six games at the venue thanks to wicketkeeper-batsman Samson’s 38 in his comeback to captaincy this season and Riyan Parag’s undefeated 43 off 25 balls.
Inaugural champions Despite Nehal Wadhera’s 62 off 41 balls, Rajasthan then held the opposition to 155-9, causing Punjab to suffer their first defeat of the season in three games.
England import Jofra Archer, who was voted player of the match, grabbed two wickets in the opening over of the chase and returned stats of 3-25.
Archer’s raw pace, which was above 140 kmph, was complemented by fellow seam bowler Sandeep Sharma, who took two wickets with his less explosive medium pace.
“That is a very deadly combo – one guy bowling around 150 and another bowling around 115,” Samson added. “We all love it when he (Archer) bowls those quick overs.”
Rahul plays anchor
At Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Delhi chose to bat first in the first game and reached 183-6 thanks to Rahul’s 51-ball innings, which featured several crucial partnerships.
In this round of the well-liked T20 league, Delhi bowlers came together to limit five-time champion Chennai to 158-5 and remain undefeated.
Chennai lost for the second time this season and for the third time in a row.
After replacing South Africa’s Faf du Plessis as opener due to injury, Rahul played a pivotal role in helping the Delhi batters secure victory.
Rahul, a 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, began his international career as an opener but has since played a variety of positions. Most recently, he was ranked number six in India’s ODI Champions Trophy.
