Men’s IPL 2026 Schedule for Playoffs
The IPL 2026 (IPL 19) follows a fast-paced T20 format, with each match consisting of 20 overs. The tournament features 10 teams and is scheduled to run from March 28 to May 31, 2026, with a total of 74 matches, including 70 league-stage games and 4 playoff matches.
In the group stage, the 10 teams are divided into two groups but compete on a single points table. Each team plays 14 matches, facing teams within their group once and teams from the opposite group twice. Teams earn 2 points for a win, 0 for a loss, and 1 point each if a match is abandoned. At the end of this stage, the top four teams on the points table qualify for the playoffs.
If you’re new to IPL and the T20 cricket format, don’t worry, it’s easier than it looks. Stay with me as I explain it simply:
The Group Stage
- There are 10 teams
- Each team plays one match against every other team.
- Teams earn points (2 for a win, 0 for a loss)
- Top 4 teams move to playoffs
The simple rule of this stage is to win more matches to get a better chance to qualify
The Playoffs
This is where things get interesting.
- Qualifier 1 → Top 2 teams play (winner goes to final)
- Eliminator → 3rd vs 4th (loser is out)
- Qualifier 2 → Loser of Q1 vs winner of Eliminator
- Final → Winner of Qualifier 1 vs Winner of Qualifier 2 Winner takes the trophy
So, basically, only the top teams in the qualifier 1 round get a second chance. Others don’t.
