The Paarl Royals’ Dinesh Karthik is set to make history as the first Indian player to play in the SA20.

Reigning champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape will play MI Cape Town at St George’s Park, which is renowned for its thrilling atmosphere, on January 9 to kick off the third season of SA20.

The Sunrisers, coached by Adrian Birrell and captained by Aiden Markram, are trying to win the championship for the third time in a row. They are still the side to beat because of their strong local core of Marco Jansen, Tristan Stubbs, and Ottneil Baartman, as well as their international talents Craig Overton and Richard Gleeson. Their batting strength is further increased by the signing of David Bedingham, and Overton covers Dan Worrall’s absence.

MI Cape Town, however, is keen to improve after placing last the previous two seasons. They have a chance to threaten the Sunrisers with Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada creating a dangerous pace pair and Reeza Hendricks partnering with Rassie van der Dussen. The loss of Ben Stokes, though, because of a hamstring injury, is a serious setback.

The event will run from January 9 to February 8, with the top four teams proceeding to the knockouts. The eliminator and second qualifier will be held in Centurion, while the first qualifier will be held in Gqeberha. Johannesburg will host the grand final.

SA20 has been successful in drawing elite international players in spite of conflicts with other T20 tournaments such as the Big Bash and ILT20. Among the famous faces to keep an eye on are Matheesha Pathirana, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, and Rashid Khan. Conway will play for the Johannesburg Super Kings in his first SA20 match, rejoining his old housemate Tabraiz Shamsi.

The Paarl Royals’ Dinesh Karthik is expected to make history as the first Indian player to compete in the SA20. In addition, he will represent the tournament as its brand ambassador. Imran Tahir, a 45-year-old experienced spinner, will play with Shamsi and Maheesh Theekshana for the Johannesburg Super Kings.

Although SA20 does not follow the Impact Player rule like the IPL does, teams are still free to choose their starting lineups after the toss. For cricket fans around the world, SA20 2025 promises to be an exciting spectacle with full stadiums and a fantastic array of players.
