Konstas downplayed the altercation, claiming that it was a result of emotions on the field.
At the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), there was some drama on Day 1 of the fourth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and India, which is knotted at one. After a heated argument with Sam Konstas, Australia’s 19-year-old debutant opener, Virat Kohli came under fire.
The situation started when Konstas blasted some spectacular smashes while batting with assurance against Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah. During an over break, Kohli engaged the young batter after attempting to agitate him verbally. When Kohli collided with Konstas, the situation worsened and the match officials had to step in.
Konstas downplayed the altercation after the game, claiming it was the result of emotions on the field.
“It was just emotions from both of us. I didn’t even realize; I was fixing my gloves when the shoulder charge happened. But these things happen in cricket,” Konstas said.
Konstas maintained composure throughout the game and amassed an impressive half-century off 52 deliveries. After scoring 60 runs off 65 deliveries, Ravindra Jadeja finally got rid of him LBW. Usman Khawaja spoke with Kohli in an attempt to defuse the situation.
Virat Kohli received a 20% fine on his match fee and the ICC gave him a demerit point for the incident.
