Tom Latham Ruled Out of Pakistan ODIs Due to Injury

Prior to their ODI series against Pakistan, New Zealand has suffered a significant blow as veteran batsman and wicketkeeper Tom Latham is sidelined with a fractured right hand. Latham will need to rest and recover for at least four weeks after sustaining the injury during a net practice.

In his absence, Henry Nicholls has been named as his replacement, while Michael Bracewell, the T20I captain, will now lead the ODI squad.

With Latham sidelined, New Zealand will have to adapt quickly as they prepare for the three-match ODI series starting March 29.

Latham’s Injury: A Major Setback for New Zealand

Latham’s absence is a big blow to the Blackcaps, especially since he was originally set to captain the side in the absence of Mitchell Santner, who is currently participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 32-year-old sustained the injury while batting in the nets, and an X-ray later confirmed a fracture. According to New Zealand Cricket (NZC), he will now be in a cast and undergo a recovery period of at least four weeks.

Gary Stead on Latham’s Absence

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment over Latham’s injury while also emphasizing the importance of other players stepping up.

“It’s obviously disappointing to lose Tom as captain on the eve of the series, and we wish him a speedy recovery. The side is in safe hands with Michael, who’s done a great job through the T20I series.”

Henry Nicholls Named as Latham’s Replacement

In Latham’s absence, Henry Nicholls has been drafted into the squad. The 33-year-old has had a strong comeback in domestic cricket, scoring five half-centuries in six innings since recovering from a calf strain that had kept him out for much of the season.

With 78 ODIs under his belt, Nicholls adds experience to the team. As New Zealand looks to counter Pakistan’s bowling onslaught, his recent steady form makes him a dependable choice.

Gary Stead on the Inclusion of Henry Nicholls

Stead emphasized Nicholls’ strong form and expertise as valuable team assets and voiced confidence in his return.

“Henry has been in good form since returning from his three-month injury layoff and will add valuable skills and experience to the team.”

Michael Bracewell to Lead New Zealand in Latham’s Absence

With Latham out of the squad, New Zealand has handed the captaincy role to Michael Bracewell. The all-rounder has already led the Blackcaps in the T20I series against Pakistan, which New Zealand won 4-1.

Bracewell’s leadership in the T20I series was praised, and his ability to adapt under pressure will be crucial as New Zealand enters the ODI format against a strong Pakistan side.

Will Young to Miss Part of the Series, Rhys Mariu Called Up

Another squad change for New Zealand is the partial unavailability of opener Will Young. The 31-year-old batter will only feature in the first ODI in Napier before leaving the squad as he and his wife await the birth of their first child.

In his place, uncapped Canterbury batter Rhys Mariu has received his first international call-up and is set to join the squad for the second and third ODIs.

Gary Stead on Young’s Absence and Mariu’s Inclusion

Coach Gary Stead emphasized the importance of adaptability in the squad and welcomed Mariu’s inclusion as an opportunity for young talent.

“We’ve had to be flexible this tour with numerous players unavailable for different reasons. What it does do is offer opportunities to other players, and it’s nice to introduce Rhys into the environment for the first time, as well as welcome back Henry.”

He also extended best wishes to Will Young and his family.

“Finally, we wish Will and his wife Elise all the best next week as they await their first child, which is such a special and important time for them.”

New Zealand’s Strong Performance in T20I Series

New Zealand comes into the ODI series against Pakistan with momentum, having clinched the T20I series 4-1. Their final victory was a dominant display, with Tim Seifert smashing an unbeaten 97 off just 38 balls, leading his team to a 10-over chase of 129 runs.

Despite missing key players, the Blackcaps have shown depth in their squad, and they will be looking to continue this form in the ODI series.
